Optimized interaction between braille display, screen reader and speech output

The ALVA 544 Satellite braille display features the most enhanced ergonomic design to date. This also extends the navigation and operation possibilities of the outSPOKEN 2.01 screen reader dramatically. With twin satellite key pads, double touch cursors, three status cells, and activation of speech feedback from the braille display, the ALVA 544 Satellite in combination with outSPOKEN allows you to be twice as productive, twice as creative and have twice as much fun, when working with computers.

Windows and Speech Satellite Key Pads

Easily navigate through complex graphic screens and give instructions for speech feedback without moving your hands to the computer keyboard. You can switch the Windows and Speech Satellite Key Pads from left to right and vice versa.

Windows Satellite Key Pad

  • Outer circle: Tab back, Tab forward
  • Inner circle: Item up, Item right, Item down, Item left

Speech Satellite Key Pad

  • Outer circle: Stop speech, Read document
  • Inner circle: Read title, Read line, Read bottom, Read word

Double Touch Cursor

  • First row: position the screen cursor exactly at the braille cell's position.
  • Second row: ask for speech feedback about text attributes or the graphics name at cursor position.
  • Simulate left and right mouse clicks.

Together with front keys, using Double Touch Cursor switches you can also:

  • open the outSPOKEN 2.01 preference dialog box,
  • toggle between spatial, compressed and no line breaks representation,
  • cycle trough text attributes, when more than one is assigned,
  • toggle speech follows braille function on or off,
  • and much more.

Status Cells for extra information about what's on the screen

outSPOKEN 2.01 can display five modes of information in the three status cells of the ALVA Satellite. In the preferences menu you can select one of the five possibilities:

  • Vertical position of the focus and vertical position of the braille display in a window, and text attributes at cursor or caret position.
  • Horizontal position of the focus and horizontal position of the braille display in a window, and text attributes at cursor position.
  • Number of controls in a dialog box, number of the control that has the focus, and the mnemonics of the control type that has the focus.
  • Number of items in a list, the selected list item, and the mnemonics of the selected list item.
  • Location of the beginning and the end of the line covered on the braille display, and the percentage of the screen covered by the active window

Front keys make navigation in Windows easy

Using the front keys of the ALVA Satellite braille display in outSPOKEN 2.01 you can:

  • navigate line by line through a window,
  • navigate up and down per column,
  • go to begin or end of a Window, using one keystroke,
  • jump from any position back to the caret or focus in a window,
  • display the contents of a status line or the title of the current window,
  • go to the top of the active window or to the Windows start button.
