I have an old machine with 4mb ram; will outspoken work on
such a low powered machine?
Will this version work with a Sound Blaster 16 bit
card and TextAssist?
Yes, it does work with SB16.
OSW repeatedly says "space, space, space,
etc" (at the UNIX prompt).
This can be adjusted by deselecting 'echo other' in the keyboard dialog
box of the VOICE PREFERENCES.
When I tried to install OSW and select a
synthesizer, there was no list to choose from.
When you extract the files with a zip utility like Pkunzip, you have to
use the '-d' statement to keep the directory structure intact. (pkunzip -d

Why does this error occur?: "guiacces.exe has

The 386enh section of the windows system.ini file is probably incorrect.
The line 'keyboard=*vkd' should read 'keyboard=C:\osw\bsivkd.386. Sometimes
a loose cable or port connection can cause the error.
With osw 1.1, and Dectalk Express (and sometimes
TextAssist), the only sounds emerging are hisses and squeaks.
The voice parameters need to be adjusted. Turn the volume down, load OSW,
and with key combination of 'shift-KPD+', and then 'v', you will be in the
voice parameter window. Turn the volume up enough to hear the difference
when you adjust the pitch, head size, laryngealization and gender settings.
Go through all the voice choices to make sure all is stable, choice 'OK' to
save and exit and then 'OK' to exit "preferences".
With ver 1.11 and an internal Dectalk synthesizer
(also TSI screen power speech software), speech is garbled.
Remove the old outspoken driver from autoexec.bat file, adjusting the
rate in the voice parameters or by using the key combination of 'ctrl-shift-KPDenter'
to slow the voice rate.
What is the difference between a speech synthesizer
and a sound card?
A speech synthesizer, PCMCIA, internal card, or external box, is a speech
-only dedicated piece of hardware. A sound card is a multimedia device that
produces speech as well as other sounds. Dedicated synthesizers often have
faster response times, but sound cards are cheaper.

work on such a low powered machine?
Yes, but running with everything else, the operating system, the speech
synthesizer, Outspoken, your machine will probably need more memory, 12 to
16 Mb, to run smoothly.
