Frequently Asked Questions for inLARGE

What is inLARGE?

inLARGE is a screen magnifier which offers 1 to 16 times magnification of all or part of the screen, the ability to invert the screen to white on black, a cross hair option for easy cursor location, an automatic scanning mode, and many other features.

The wide range of options available with inLARGE is designed to allow users to customize the program to fit their individual needs. inLARGE can be adjusted to give people with low vision access to most Macintosh applications, or it can be configured to provide relief from the eye strain caused by spending a lot of time in front of a computer. The Scan Mode and the Background command can be helpful for people with learning disabilities. And enlarging just a portion of the screen is useful for doing detailed graphics work.

What are the requirements for inLARGE?

Will inLARGE work on a G3 or an iMac?

Will inLARGE work with Mac OS 8.6?

inLARGE will run on any Macintosh (68K-based Macintosh, Power Macintosh, PowerBooks, G3s and iMac's), that meet the following requirements:

  • At least System 6.0.5 is required, although Mac OS 7.5.3 or newer is recommended, including Mac OS 8.6.
  • inLARGE 2.1 requires at least 4 MB of installed RAM for itself. That is, over and above the amount of RAM required to run your Mac OS and other applications. We also recommend physical RAM as opposed to "virtual" RAM, such as Virtual Memory and RAM Doubler. If you are running in high resolution and/or on a monitor larger than 19 inches, inLARGE may require an additional 1-2 MB of free RAM.
  • inLARGE 2.1 will work in a maximum of 256 colors/grays (8-bit color).

Will inLARGE work with Mac OS 9.0?

As of this writing, Apple has announced Mac OS 9.0, but it has not yet been released. However, our development team has examined the pre-release versions of Mac OS 9.0 and foresee no compatibility issues with inLARGE 2.1.

How do I install inLARGE?

Before installing inLARGE, quit any applications that may be running and close all windows. Then follow these steps:

  1. Insert the inLARGE Disk into your Mac's disk drive.
  2. Open the disk's window by double-clicking on its icon.
  3. From the inLARGE window, drag the one item, the control panel called "inLARGE 2.1" (it has a picture of a magnifying glass) on top of your hard disk icon. A copy of inLARGE should be placed in your hard disk. (If you get a message about locked disks, click OK.)
  4. Drag the inLARGE disk icon into the Trash to eject it from your Mac.
  5. Double-click your hard disk icon to open its window.
  6. Locate the inLARGE 2.1 icon and drag it on top of your System Folder icon. If you are using System 7.0 or newer a dialog should appear that says "Control Panels need to be placed in the Control Panels Folder...". Click the OK button. (If you do not get this dialog, inLARGE has not been properly installed.)
  7. Before restarting the Mac, be sure to remove all copies of CloseView and any earlier versions of inLARGE or inLARGE Demo from your System Folder. These items are generally found in the "Control Panels" folder or the "Control Panels (Disabled)" folder.
  8. Restart your Macintosh. inLARGE will start up automatically when your Mac restarts.

Can I have both inLARGE and CloseView installed at the same time?

During the installation, they may both be present within the Control Panels folder. However, CloseView MUST be removed BEFORE you restart the computer; otherwise, a crash will occur. You may use the Extensions Manager to control whether inLARGE or CloseView is installed when the Mac starts up.

When I turn inLARGE on, why doesn't the pointer magnify?

After inLARGE is turned on, clicking the mouse button either does not work or the click occurs in the wrong place. What's up?

This is a known bug on some Macs. These problems can be resolved by launching an application while inLARGE is turned on. From the Finder with inLARGE turned on, do the following:

  1. Launch Find File by pressing Command-F.
  2. Quit Find File by pressing Command-Q.The mouse pointer will be magnified and mouse clicks will occur in the proper location.

Note: These problems will not occur if inLARGE is on when you start your Mac.

inLARGE is installed in the Control Panels folder, but it does not work and when I open the inLARGE control panel, a message says that it is not installed. What's up?

The inLARGE control panel cannot be nested inside a folder or disk within the Control Panels folder. Locate the inLARGE control panel, click once on it to highlight it, and then select Get Info from the File Menu. Its Kind should be:control paneland its location (Where) should be:Your Hard Disk's Name: System Folder: Control Panels: inLARGE

If the "kind" and "where" listed is anything else, you do not have inLARGE properly installed. Use Find File to locate all items whose name contains inLARGE and move them to the Trash. Then, follow the instructions to properly reinstall inLARGE.

Why is inLARGE not working even though it is installed correctly?

Open the inLARGE control panel and check the following:

  1. inLARGE is on if the "On" check box has a check in it. If it does not, click it once.
  2. inLARGE may be on, but none of its features may be active. Click the "Use Defaults" button. This will set the magnification level to 4.

inLARGE works while I am in the Finder, but I cannot enter any inLARGE commands from the keyboard while I am in programs. Why?

There is probably a keyboard conflict with the program. For example, in Microsoft Word, Command-Option-O is the keyboard command for Open Location. Entering this keyboard command while in Word will bring up the Open Location dialog box instead of toggling inLARGE on and off. There are several ways around this. You may choose to do any of the following:

  • Open the inLARGE control panel and select different modifier keys to be used with inLARGE. You may, for example, select Control-Command-Option to be the modifier keys recognized by inLARGE.
  • You may find that a program has keyboard commands for selections that you will never use. Refer to the program's documentation to see if you can disable those keyboard commands from within the program. (Look under Preferences, Options, Tools, Customize, etc.)
  • Switch out of the program using the Application Menu or Application Switcher, make the changes to inLARGE using the inLARGE keyboard commands and then switch back to the original application.
  • Open the inLARGE control panel, click either the "Display Commands" button or the "Motion Commands" button, make the desired changes, click OK and close the inLARGE control panel.

I think inLARGE is on, but all that I see on the screen is a black box in the lower left corner. What is happening?

inLARGE is on, but all of its features are off. Do either of the following:

  • Use any of the inLARGE keyboard commands to invert the screen or increase the magnification.
  • Enter the inLARGE control panel and click the "Use Defaults" button, or click either the "Display Commands" button or the "Motion Commands" button to change the specific settings that you want.

Why does my Mac crash during start up when inLARGE is loaded?

There may be several reasons for this. You may prevent inLARGE from installing during start up by pressing and holding the Control key down when you see the "Welcome" screen as soon as the Mac starts. Keep it pressed until you see the inLARGE icon appear at the bottom of the screen with an 'X' through it. Check for the following:

  1. You cannot have multiple copies of inLARGE installed at a time. This includes inLARGE Demo. Remove the additional copies and restart the Mac.
  2. CloseView cannot be installed at the same time as inLARGE. Remove CloseView from the System Folder or disable it with the Extensions Manager and restart the Mac.
  3. Trash the inLARGE prefs file which is located in the Preferences folder inside your System Folder. Restart the Mac.
  4. Open the "Monitors" or the "Monitors and Sound" control panel and select the lowest color setting possible: either "Black and White" or "256". Close the control panel and restart the Mac. If this works, open the inLARGE control panel and click the "Display Commands" button. Check the "Allocate memory for 256 colors" check box in the lower left corner of the settings dialog and click OK. Close the control panel and restart. If the Mac starts up okay, go back to the Monitors control panel and set the colors to 256, then close and restart again.
  5. Use the Extensions Manager to disable the following items which may cause conflicts with inLARGE: Extensions: SAM Intercept, Type ReunionControl Panels: Express Modem
  6. You may not have enough built-in RAM for all the control panels and extensions that you have installed. inLARGE generally needs 4 MB installed RAM, but may require more if you are running in color or high resolution or are using a 19" or larger monitor. Use the Extensions Manager to disable unnecessary extensions and control panels.
  7. inLARGE may be having problems with Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler. Open the "Memory" control panel and turn off virtual memory. Close the control panel and restart the Mac. If you have RAM Doubler, you should use the RAM Doubler Installer to remove RAM Doubler and then restart the Mac.
  8. There may be an unknown conflict: Use the Extensions Manager to disable all extensions and control panels except for inLARGE and turn items back on one at a time, restarting after each item is turned on. If you find a conflict, please contact the ALVA Access Group.

When I am in a program, the screen jumps around wildly and/or flickers. How can I stop this from happening?

This is usually caused by a window opening and closing. Some programs have screen or tool tips that appear in small windows when you point to a graphic or the pointer is in a certain area of the screen. If you are not interested in this information, refer to the program's documentation to disable these active areas of the screen. If you want this information, then disable inLARGE's Follow New Window option (in some cases the inLARGE Follow I-Bar option may also cause this problem):

  1. Open the inLARGE control panel and click the "Motion Commands" button.
  2. Uncheck Follow New Window and/or Follow I-Bar.
  3. Click OK and close the inLARGE control panel.

In Microsoft Word 6.x and 98 for Macintosh, inLARGE does not follow the I-Bar while I am typing, even though Follow I-Bar is checked. Why?

Microsoft is aware of their problem in this area and promises to fix it in a future release.
