Simon Sounds it Out S.I.O. engages students with an animated, personal tutor appropriate for older students that presents skill-building activities to maintain students' interest, vary practice and generalize learning. Students learn sounds, build words, practice, discriminate and recall words. Students read words into a microphone and hear them read back.

Simon Sounds it Out Progress Reports Detailed progress reports show student progress and where improvement is required. Data tracking shows a student's current level, current activity, total sessions, total words, study sounds, study words, recorded sentences, accuracy scores and recent activity. Teachers can quickly check students' progress on-screen or print portfolio reports for records, conferences and progress reports.


 

Comprehension components assure balanced approach
Comprehension is integrated throughout Simon S.I.O. because phonics skills on their own are just the beginning; understanding that words carry meaning is the goal. When a word is learned, illustrations reinforce its meaning. Students are asked to "imagine what the accompanying picture will show" and "think about what you read."

Voice and corrective feedback help students succeed
Multi-sensory supports-auditory, visual and print- keep struggling students on an uphill learning path. All words and sounds are carefully pronounced for great modeling. Multiple levels of redirection and corrective feedback gently nudge students to the correct response. The personalized tutor constantly interacts with students with directions, hints and encouragement. Simon S.I.O. monitors each student's progress word-by-word, repeating problem words until the student achieves mastery.

Simon Sounds it Out Scanning
  Scanning is available in all Simon S.I.O. activities with no special programming or adaptations. Activity buttons are scanned, or, as in the Spell activity, a scanning keyboard appears so that switch users can use the whole program and get more opportunities to interact with words.
