Hot Tips List
(Last Updated March 2, 1998)
1. Does JAWS seem to skip over or not read the new line that scrolls onto the bottom
of the screen?
The possible cause could be the taskbar. If it is set to "taskbar always on
top" at the bottom of your desktop, it may partially obscure the bottom line of the
current window and JAWS does not see it to read it. You can go to the taskbar Properties
dialog and uncheck the Always On Top check box. If you continue to encounter these
problems you may have a video card compatibility problem. Read "Series One Video
Cards and JAWS" in the "Compatibility Series" the Technical Support web
page.
2. Do you have any information on using a voice synthesizer that is not included in
the install program?
You will need to modify the JFW.INI file to let JAWS for Windows know what synthesizer
you are going to use. When you have opened the INI file, look for the [Synthesizers]
section. For this example, we will use "genericsynth" to indicate your
synthesizer. Modify the [Synthesizers] section to look like this:
[Synthesizers]
Synth 1 Name=GenericSynth
Synth 1 LongName=Generic Synthesizer
Synth 1 Port=lpt1
Synth 1 Driver=SSIL
You may not be able to find a specific Microsoft Windows 95 driver to load. In this
case, simply load the driver in the CONFIG.SYS.
