Henter-Joyce Technical Support Notice #1 (TSN-1)
Subject: Running a MS-DOS Screen Reader in a MS-DOS Window in Windows 95
Category: Windows 95
April 10, 1997

The MS-DOS screen reader should be loaded when you open the MS-DOS window. This can be accomplished by settings in the properties dialog for the "MS-DOS Prompt". There is an option in that dialog to run a batch file as the window is being opened. Put in the batch file to load the screen reader and you are done.

Here are the steps:

Go to the task bar (control+escape, escape, tab);
press alt+enter for the properties dialog;
go to the "start menu" page and select "advanced" (shift+tab, right arrow, tab three times, press enter);
This is a list view, go to the "MS-DOS prompt" choice in the start menu (use arrow keys or "P" to get to "programs", enter , use arrow keys or "m" to get to "MS-DOS Prompt");
pres alt+enter to get another properties dialog;
go to the "programs" page (shift tab, right arrow, tab);
Now you'll see the command line, the batch file edit box, and the short cut key field, and other things; add "c:\JAWS\JAWS.BAT" in the batch file edit box or enter the path to your screen reader.
tab to the short cut field and press "d" (or whatever you want);
press okay and you are done.

Now you can open a MS-DOS window (with the short cut key if you want) and it will load JAWS.

To review the process: Start menu, Settings menu item, Task Bar menu item, Start Menu tab, Advanced button, programs folder, MS-DOS prompt, properties dialog, programs tab, place path to a batch file to start your screen reader in the batch file edit box, define a shortcut key if you want, okay button.

If you have a MS-DOS tsr to drive the synthesizer, like dt_driv for the DECtalk, then it should be loaded by autoexec.bat when the computer is first started.

Be sure to include "switches=/c" in your config.sys to be sure your MS-DOS screen reader works as expected.
