Here are the findings concerning Run JAWS First and user profiles in Windows 95. The Run JAWS First option is executed in the Windows 95 Registry before network support is initiated. The reason is apparent: the user can then enter the username and password into the system by using speech. User profiles are initiated after network support has been started.

Note that if your network password is different from your Windows password, you are always prompted for your network password first, as long as the line network=1 is in the options section of the Windows 95 msdos.sys file.

To summarize: Windows loads its core components, (kernel32.dll, gdi.exe and user.exe) and at some point after that but before network Support, your Run JAWS First option is started. Your hardware settings are initiated before Your Run JAWS First, but you generally don't get the prompt for a new hardware device until after initial log-on to network. Following that, your network support/password starts, and then your Windows user profiles are initiated upon entering the Windows Password, stored in your user pwl file.* Information supplied by Dave Baker.
