The JAWS for Windows installation is a talking installation and has been
designed so that you can install JAWS for Windows and make installation
decisions with the assistance of speech. The installation process has been
designed to guide you through the installation procedure. At some points
important details will be spoken about a particular choice to help you make
the correct decision for your custom installation. If your computer is
equipped with speakers and a multi-media sound card, the initial part of the
installation will be spoken. Before you place your JAWS for Windows CD in the
CD-ROM drive, you will want to make sure your speakers are plugged in, turned
on and the volume is turned up.
Before you begin, you will want to be aware of a few things if you are
installing additional synthesizers. If you are installing a hardware
synthesizer you want to make sure you know the name of the hardware
synthesizer, and what Com or Serial port you will be using for that display.
While we provide documentation on some speech synthesizers, the documentation
that came with your synthesizer should be your primary source of information.
You may find some documentation for your synthesizer in the JFW35\TECHNOTES\ENU
directory.
Note: When installing multiple synthesizers, select the Eloquence software
as your default synthesizer if you have a multimedia CD-ROM. This is
recommended as a precautionary measure to ensure that you have speech
immediately following the installation. Once you are sure your hardware
synthesizer is working properly you can change your default synthesizer.
If your computer system has more than one synthesizer installed, you can
review your synthesizer choices and switch to another installed synthesizer.
Follow the instructions below to switch to another synthesizer.
- Press INSERT+J to open JFW.
- Press ALT+L, C to open the Change Synthesizer menu.
