Questions before I install Connect Outloud

Q. What do I need on my computer other than Connect Outloud to try the software?

A. You will need to be running Windows 95, 98, Millennium, NT 4.0 - Service Pack 4 or greater, or Windows 2000 Professional. You will also need a Sound Card in your computer.

Q. What about access to the Internet and email?

A. Connect Outloud is designed to work with Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.01, or 5.5. For email, it works with Outlook Express that is included with these versions of Internet Explorer. You will also need a connection to an Internet provider, of course.

Q. What is the difference between Web Access Software and the JAWS Screen Reader?

A. JAWS works in all the places that Connect Outloud works, but it also works with many other applications such as Microsoft Office, Corel's Office Suite, Outlook 2000, Eudora, etc. JAWS also gives the user many tools to configure your Screen Reader in applications where speech could be improved. Connect Outloud is set up and designed to just speak in certain applications such as Internet Explorer 5.5 and Outlook Express, and there is no need to do any customization other than speech rate and how much punctuation is spoken.

Q. Is there a demonstration version of Connect Outloud, and, if so, how long does it work?

A. When you download Connect Outloud from our web page, you can install it and run it as a demo. It is fully functional for 24 hours of actual use.

Q. If I order Connect Outloud, do I receive anything other than what I download?

A. Yes. Every purchase of Connect Outloud comes with a Certificate of Ownership that includes your own 16-digit code to activate the license. You also get a CD with the Connect Outloud Software and we also include
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5.5 and Outlook Express. A Quick Reference Guide, in both print and Braille, comes with your package. Quick Reference material is installed with the software so you can read this with the Demo Product after you install.

Q. If I purchase Connect Outloud, is there a discount on other Freedom Scientific Products?

A. Currently there is no upgrade policy in place. If this changes in the future, we will make the information available through our web site and dealer network.

Q. If I have another product such as a Screen Reader installed already, can I still try Connect Outloud on my computer?

A. Yes, however you should also follow the recommendations of the manufacturer of the other products before hand. In the case of JAWS or MAGic, we do not support running them at the same time but you may certainly install them on the same system and use the independently.

Q. What if I have a Braille Display, Note-Taker, or other synthesizer? Can I use them with Connect Outloud?

A. You can do a custom installation of Connect Outloud and choose one of the most of the popular Braille Displays and Note-takers from a list, but Connect Outloud will not support any synthesizers other than the English Eloquence software Synthesizer that is installed automatically with Connect Outloud.

Questions after I've installed Connect Outloud

Q. I just installed Connect Outloud. Where is the best place to start? Are there any special keystrokes to learn?

A. When Connect Outloud starts, you will be on the main Connect Outloud Application Window. If you press the Tab key, you will cycle through all the different features you can adjust. On each item, pressing Insert and the Function F1 key, will give you more details of what these different things do.

Q. After I land on something, can I get it to repeat the information?

A. Pressing the Insert Key and the Tab Key will speak the information again and give you any available tutor information.

Q. Where do I learn more keystrokes?

A. You can learn a great deal about the product from the Help System by pressing enter on the Help Button. You can also get a good overview by reading the Quick Reference Guide. This can be found through the Start Menu under Programs, Connect Outloud. The Quick Reference Guide will open in Notepad and can be read with Connect Outloud.

Q. How long will the Demonstration last?

A. It is designed to run for 24 hours of actual use. Move to the button called "more..." and press enter. You will find another button that says "About..." Pressing enter here will show you how much time is remaining.

Q. Can I order the product from a dealer or a store?

A. You will need to contact a Freedom Scientific Authorized Dealer to purchase. If you need help finding a dealer, you can contact Freedom Scientific and request information on the dealers in your area.

Q. Does this work with the OPENBook software?

A. Yes. If you have a system with the OPENBook Scan and Read program, Connect Outloud will work very well on the same computer. If you add a Braille Note-Taker or Display, Connect Outloud will give you Braille Output in addition to speech output from OPENBook.

Q. When I'm in some programs, I hear a short descending tone and then Connect Outloud stops talking. Is there something wrong? How do I get the speech back?

A. Since Connect Outloud is only designed to work with certain programs, it will stop speaking if you move into an unsupported application. The descending tone alerts you that it cannot support that application. Pressing Insert and the Space Bar will bring back speech and you land in a list box of any programs currently running that are supported. Arrow to one of these and press enter to return to the talking applications.
