About JAWS® for Windows®
JAWS® for Windows (JFW) screen reader software, runs under either Microsoft
Windows® 95/98 or Windows® NT 4.0. JFW offers comprehensive screen reading
capability that includes extended product customization through powerful utility
managers.
JAWS for Windows users have computer skill levels that range from beginner to
expert. Because we don't know your particular skill level, we offer you several
choices of online Help. You can get general concept information and then
continue right down to the basic 1-2-3 steps of each function. By either using
keystrokes or clicking with a mouse, you are able to browse through the Help
documentation. Blind or visually impaired users can listen while JAWS for
Windows speaks the selected Help topics. For sighted users, the Help text is
also displayed on the screen for you to read. You control the level of Help you
receive by choosing the topics you want to hear or read.
Before you install JAWS for Windows, you should read the Henter-Joyce
Software License Agreement. It is enclosed in the JAWS for Windows Quick Start
Guide and in the online Help. When you open the package containing the JFW
software, you automatically accept all terms and conditions of the license
agreement. As stated in the Henter-Joyce Software License Agreement (see page
16), you are licensed to use JFW under certain conditions and prohibited from
giving copies of JFW software to others.
System Requirements
To use JAWS for Windows, version 3.5, you need:
A personal computer that will run the Windows 95/98 operating system, or Windows
NT 4.0.
If you intend to use the Eloquence for JFW software synthesizer, you will need a
Windows 95/98 or Windows NT compatible sound card. If you choose not to use
Eloquence for JFW then you must have a JFW-compatible hardware synthesizer.
30 MB of available hard disk space required.
VGA or higher-resolution video adapter (Super VGA 256-color recommended).
As with most systems, the faster the processor and the more memory your computer
has, the better the performance of your computer and our product.
JFW 3.5 is a true 32-bit program, and will not work in the Windows 3.1x
environment. For the convenience of those who need speech access in the Windows
3.1x environment, JFW 2.0 is also included on the installation CD.
Instructions for Installing JAWS for Windows
The JAWS for Windows installation is a talking installation and has been
designed so that you can install JAWS for Windows and make installation
decisions with the assistance of speech. The installation process has been
designed to guide you through the installation procedure. At some points
important details will be spoken about a particular choice to help you make the
correct decision for your custom installation. If your computer is equipped with
speakers and a multi-media sound card, the initial part of the installation will
be spoken. Before you place your JAWS for Windows CD in the CD ROM drive, you
will want to make sure your speakers are plugged in, turned on and the volume is
turned up.
Before you begin, you will want to be aware of a few things if you are
installing additional synthesizers and/or braille displays. If you are
installing a hardware synthesizer you want to make sure you know the name of the
hardware synthesizer, and what Com or Serial port you will be using for that
synthesizer. If you choose to install a braille display, make sure you know the
name of that display and what Com or Parallel port you will be using for that
display.
While we provide documentation on some speech synthesizers, the documentation
that came with your synthesizer should be your primary source of information.
You may find some documentation for your synthesizer in the JFW35\TECHNOTES\ENU
directory.
Note: When installing multiple synthesizers, select the Eloquence software
synthesizer as your default synthesizer if you have a multi-media CD ROM. This
is recommended as a precautionary measure to ensure you have speech immediately
following the installation. Once you are sure your hardware synthesizer is
working properly you can change your default synthesizer.
Before you begin your installation make sure you have located the 3.5-inch disk
that has been shipped with your product. A couple of scenarios could occur
depending on your situation. You many have been shipped just an authorization
disk or if you are upgrading you may have been shipped an update disk and an
authorization disk. If you were shipped an update disk and you are prompted to
insert that disk, then insert the update disk into the drive so the computer can
make the necessary updates to your computer. If your computer prompts you to
insert an update disk and you do not have one, simply select the option that
tells the computer you do not have an update disk and move on to the next step.
When the computer asks you to insert your authorization disk, insert that disk
into your drive so the computer can move the authorization key onto your hard
drive.
More information about authorization issues can be found in the Authorizing JFW
book of the online Help system.
Note: Refer to page 5 for further details on some of the options that you will
encounter during the install.
Upgrading from A Previous Version
If you are installing JFW for the first time, go to Installation (see page 5)
for steps on how to begin the installation process.
By default, JFW 3.5 will be installed in C:\JFW35. If you want JFW to be
installed in another folder (directory), you must create the new folder name.
When updating JFW, existing JFW files will be overwritten/replaced if you
install the new version into the old version's directory. If you want to keep
more than one version of JFW on your computer, type in a different directory
name during the setup process to designate where you want the newest version to
install. You can also make sure that the older version is still available after
installing the new version by using the Windows Explorer to copy the old JFW
folder before installing the new version. For example, you can copy your current
JFW folder (directory) to a new folder and use a name that reflects the version
number, such as JFW32.
When the Merge Manager utility runs during the custom installation of JFW 3.5,
changes and additions to previous versions are automatically merged into your
dictionary, graphic, and configuration files. You do not have to manually merge
the changes from the previous files to the new version.
If you added or modified script files to your source directory in a previous
version of JFW, they will be copied from your old directory to the new source
directory. If you modified scripts that ship with JFW they will be overwritten
in the new JFW 3.5 directory.
Installation
To begin the installation process, insert the CD containing the JAWS for
Windows version 3.5 software into your CD-ROM drive. Your computer system should
automatically detect the installation files and program executable files, and
begin speaking as it runs through the diagnostics and setup process. If you do
not have the Windows AutoRun option activated, then you may need to run
SETUP.EXE from the root of the installation CD.
Note: JAWS for Windows setup might not run correctly if you are using virus
protection software. Make sure that any virus protection software is turned off
or not running while you run the JAWS for Windows setup program. After you have
set up JFW, you can restart your virus protection program.
During installation, JFW runs a diagnostic tool, called Dr. JAWS, that
reviews your current system and recommends the best setup for running JAWS for
Windows. It will check the number of colors and the video card in your system
and if you desire, it will even make the appropriate adjustments to your system.
At the end of the installation procedure, you may be prompted to insert the
update disk or the authorization disk. JFW will then update your authorization
or install a new authorization key from your authorization disk. If JFW
determines that authorization has not been installed properly, it will open the
Authorizing JFW Help topic (see page 10).
Note: When installing JFW 3.5 on a network it is necessary to map the drives
then restart JFW.
Note: You must be logged into Microsoft Windows NT as an administrator in order
to install the NT version of JFW 3.5.
If assistance is needed during installation, please contact Henter-Joyce
Technical Support at 1-727-803-8600.

Troubleshooting
If JAWS for Windows does not speak after the installation, follow these
suggestions:
If you have a new speech synthesizer, you should verify the tightness of the
synthesizer connections including external speaker or headphone connections, and
be sure the volume level is set to a mid-range loudness setting. If your
synthesizer installation instructions require the installation of a synthesizer
driver, then be sure it has been installed properly. If you installed an
external synthesizer, be sure you connected to the port you indicated during the
setup process and that its power supply is connected and the synthesizer is
turned on.
If your speech synthesizer had been working with an MS-DOS screen reader and
does not work with JFW, begin your troubleshooting by looking at your Windows
Taskbar. Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu, press ESC, and then TAB to
activate the Taskbar. In Windows 98, sometimes it will take you first to the
toolbar and then again to the taskbar. You should find JFW by using the arrow
key to move through the list of running applications. If JAWS is not in the
list, then it has not been loaded. Follow the steps to load JFW in the Starting
JAWS procedure.
If you load JFW and it appears in the Windows Taskbar but it does not speak, you
may have selected an incorrect synthesizer option during the installation. If a
synthesizer setting is incorrect JFW will not be able to communicate with the
synthesizer. You can confirm your installation settings by viewing the
Synthesizers section of JFW.INI. During the installation, JFW.INI is created and
placed in your JFW directory. If the settings found in this file are incorrect,
then you should reinstall JFW.
Contact Henter-Joyce Technical Support at 1-727-803-8600 if JFW still does not
speak after trying these suggestions.
Note: While we provide documentation on some speech synthesizers, the
documentation that came with your synthesizer should be your primary source of
information. You may find some documentation for your synthesizer in the JFW35\TECNOTES\ENU
directory.
If JFW does not read the text on the screen and if you receive a General
Protection Fault (GPF) "blue screen" after attempting to load JFW or
other similar symptoms occur, refer to Series 1 Video Cards and JAWS in the
Compatibility Series. You can find this document in the Technical Support
section on the Henter-Joyce web site, www.hj.com.
After installing JFW under Windows NT, you must reboot your computer. If after
rebooting, you are notified again that you need to reboot your computer when you
try to start JFW, there may be additional video drivers that are hindering JFW
from properly installing. Some remote software packages hinder JFW from
installing properly because they add their own hooks to the Windows NT video
configuration. If a remote software package such as PC Anywhere or Remotely
Possible is installed on your computer, you must uninstall it before installing
JFW.
After JFW is successfully installed, you can reinstall the remote software.
Authorizing JAWS
This section provides information about a small but very important part of the
JFW program: the authorization key. An authorization key is simply a file with
information that your computer needs in order to successfully start JFW. This
information is located on your authorization disk and must be present on your
hard disk drive when JFW starts. The authorization key is crucial to JAWS for
Windows to work properly.
Usually, the authorization key is automatically installed onto your computer the
first time you start or update JFW. Authorization FAQs have been compiled
containing the most popular questions and answers that have been asked regarding
authorization. In addition to providing useful information about our
authorization scheme, the authorization FAQs also provide information useful for
solving authorization key issues.
You can move (install/uninstall) authorization keys from the disk to the hard
drive and from the hard drive to the disk for those times when you want to
reformat your drive, do drive maintenance, or perhaps use JFW on a different
computer. You can manually install/move the authorization key from the disk to
the hard drive if this occurs. The authorization FAQs contain useful information
on manually moving authorization keys to and from your computer.
If you have an authorization problem, it is recommended that you first look at
Frequently Asked Questions about newer authorization on this page. The latest
version of the authorization application is shipped with JAWS. The Appendix
section of this manual provides information about our older version for your
reference. It also contains questions and answers that are common to both. If
your question is not answered in this section, then you will need to look at the
specific FAQ that matches your authorization disk. Before viewing the specific
authorization FAQs, you must first determine which version you are using (see
page 29).
If you are using the older authorization, look at the FAQ, frequently asked
questions found on page 29 in the Appendix.
Purchasers of a single user license of the JFW software receive five
authorization keys. Purchasers of a JFW Timed Evaluation receive five
authorization keys that will operate for a 60-day period.
Frequently Asked Questions about Newer
Authorization Versions
Note: JFW 3.5 runs in a 40 minute demo mode if not authorized. This is to let
you check the following
Q: Can I back up my hard drive while the authorization key is installed on my
computer?
A: No. This authorization key must be removed prior to any backup process.
Q: Should I defragment my hard drive while an authorization key is installed on
my computer?
A: If you are using the Windows defragmenting utility it is safe to defragment
your hard drive with an authorization key installed on your computer. However,
the use of a third party defragmenting utility is not recommended and may result
in damage to your authorization key. You should take precautions when using
these utilities or when performing any type of hard drive maintenance. You might
want to move your authorization key from your hard drive to the original
authorization disk before doing any maintenance for safe keeping. You can also
check the preferences on the utility program and see if you can configure it to
not move hidden files. By doing this, it should make it safe to run your utility
program with the authorization key installed.
Q: How do I identify the authorization disk?
A: For those of you who have the installation disks, the authorization disk is
labeled in both print and braille with the word "authorization."
Note: Because of the different versions through the years of the authorization
keys and their support software, it is best not to mix parts of old
authorization disks with newer authorization disks, or vice versa.
Q: How do I get additional authorization keys?
A: Henter-Joyce has provided five authorization keys because we know there will
be unusual situations where an authorization key is accidentally deleted or
corrupted and a replacement is needed. If your number of authorization keys
falls below three, then contact Henter-Joyce Technical Support at
1-727-803-8600.
Q: I want to update to the new Windows 98. What should I do about my current
authorization key?
A: We suggest that you move your authorization key back to the disk before
installing Windows 98. After installing Windows 98, you can reinstall the
authorization key.
Q: What do I do with my timed evaluation authorization key when installing a
full version of JFW 3.5?
A: When a JFW Timed Evaluation expires, JFW will automatically run the TE2FULL
utility that will update you to your new permanent authorization. Your old
authorization key will be removed and replaced by the new authorization. Should
an error occur during this process, you should ensure that the timed evaluation
authorization key was completely removed. If it was not removed, then follow the
steps to manually remove your authorization key.
Q: How do I manually move an authorization key to or from my hard drive?
A: Open the Start menu and use the HJAUTH command in the Run dialog. For
example, type [C:\JFW35\HJAUTH.EXE] in the Run dialog to run the HJAUTH program
from the default installed directory. The program displays a dialog window.
Select the appropriate radio button from the list of Available Commands to
install or uninstall the authorization key. Remember to keep in mind the
appropriate drives when moving authorization keys from hard drive to disk and
vice versa. In some situations, you may encounter an error message because you
do not have any more authorization keys to copy or there already was an
authorization key on the hard disk drive.
Note: See page 31 in the Appendix section for further details.
Q: How do I determine the number of authorization keys on my JFW authorization
disk?
A: Insert your original authorization disk into the disk drive and open the
Start menu and then the Run dialog. Type [A:\HJAUTH] in the Open field and press
ENTER.
The program displays a dialog with various options. Select the appropriate radio
button from the list of Available Commands to get the install count. TAB to the
edit following the Install Count radio button and type [A:].
Choose the EXECUTE button to display the number of authorization keys. The
Information section of the window displays authorization statistics such as
Serial Number, Current Version, Reset Usage Count, Expire Date, Version Type,
and other valuable details. If you are using JFW to read the information,
setting the screen echo to ALL (INSERT+S) reads the data as it appears on the
screen.
Q: How do I know if I already have an authorization key on my hard drive?
A: Insert your original authorization radio button, type [C:]. Choose the
EXECUTE button to display the authorization information. If there is no
authorization on your hard drive, the words "No Authorization Found"
will be displayed. If you are using JFW to read the information, setting the
screen echo to ALL (INSERT+S) reads the data as it appears on the screen.
Q: I think I mixed up my authorization disks. How do I tell which authorization
disk goes with the version I installed on my PC?
A: Press INSERT+J to make the JFW window active and then go to the menu bar.
Choose the Help submenu and then the About option. The serial number displays in
this window. Make a note of it. Next you will need to get the serial number from
your authorization disk. Put your authorization disk in the drive and type [A:\HJAUTH.EXE]
in the Run Dialog First box. Select the appropriate radio button from the list
of available commands to get the authorization information. TAB to the edit
following the authorization Information radio button and type [A:]. Choose the
EXECUTE button to display the authorization information. The Information section
of the window displays authorization statistics including the Serial Number. If
authorization is installed on the hard drive, the serial number will be included
in the displayed authorization information. This serial number should match the
one found in the JFW About box.
If you discover you have installed the wrong authorization key, uninstall it
onto its matching authorization disk, then reinstall the correct authorization
key.
Q: How do I perform an authorization reset?
A: Follow these instructions to reset your authorization for JFW.

This completes the first half of the process. Continue with step 8 to finish the
second part of the procedure.
8. Press TAB again until you get to the Available Commands group of radio
buttons.
9. Choose the Install authorization button.
10. Press TAB to locate the EXECUTE button and press ENTER to complete the reset
procedure.
If your question remains unanswered after viewing the FAQs, contact Henter-Joyce
technical support at 1-727-803-8600.
Confirming the Type of Authorization Used
Note: JFW 3.5 runs in a 40 minute demo mode if not
authorized. This is to let you check the following
First you need to confirm which version of the authorization you are using.
To determine what kind of authorization disk you are using, follow these steps:
1. Open an MS-DOS session. On most computers, there is a Command Prompt menu
item under Programs in the Start menu CTRL+ESC that will open an MS-DOS session.
2. Type [A:] and press ENTER to log onto the A: drive.
3. Type [CHECK.EXE]. If this is an older locked disk, the authorization
information will be displayed. If this is not a locked disk, the following text
will be displayed: EVCHK3 Authorization Error = 7051-0005-3D00
Before assuming that no authorization exists on this drive, use the command
HJAUTH CHECK A: to check the disk drive.
4. If this error is displayed, type [HJAUTH CHECK A:] and press ENTER. If this
is a newer locked disk, the authorization information will be displayed.
5. If neither CHECK.EXE nor HJAUTH CHECK A: display authorization information,
then this is an unauthorized disk. Contact Henter-Joyce technical support for
details on obtaining an authorized disk.
