Inspiration - Ocean CreaturesExcerpt from Meeting Standards with Inspiration. Overview Students can explore the undersea world and, at the same time, understand the categories represented by the creatures that live there. Standard All students should develop an understanding of the characteristics of organisms. All students should develop an understanding of organisms and environments. Skills 1. Research skills 2. Sort organisms found in the ocean according to habits and characteristics 3. Technology tasks such as create, name, save, keyboarding and so forth Materials needed 1. Inspiration® 2. Inspiration Language Arts-Comparison template 3. Reference books, CD-ROM material, Internet sites and other resources for researching sea creatures Preparation 1. Use the Inspiration Language Arts-Comparison template to prepare a diagram like the one on the next page. 2. Help students find information on sea anemones and jellyfish. As a group, have them suggest where this information would go on the diagram as they verbally compare and contrast the creatures. 3. Have each student make a "data sheet" based on the template. This should include five similarities shared by the creatures and three characteristics unique to each creature. On the computer 1. Students should bring their data sheets to the computer lab. They can work independently or in pairs to fill in the diagram you prepared earlier. Encourage them to use their own words. 2. When students have finished, direct their attention to the Inspiration sea Symbol libraries. Encourage students to decorate their diagrams with these creatures. Follow-up activities 1. Have students speculate about the creatures' roles in their ecosystem. 2. Use this approach when researching other curriculum information. 3. Have the students create a Venn diagram to view their information differently. You can use the Inspiration Thinking-Venn Diagram template to get started.
