The Rhythm of Learning: Music as a Teacher Tool
Don't be surprised if strains of jazz leak into the hallways of
Boston Public Schools during the coming year! In June, Inspiration was
included in The Rhythm of Learning, a week-long training Institute for
teams of middle and high school teachers sponsored by Boston Public
Schools, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Symphony Orchestra,
and the WGBH Teacher Center.
The Institute focused on ways to integrate music and technology into
the curriculum. One team of teachers created a classroom project using
Inspiration. Focusing on the music and life of Billie Holiday, the
teachers first used Inspiration's Rapid Fireô feature to brainstorm,
quickly capturing students' knowledge of the artist.Students then
followed up on the brainstorming session by doing research, filling in
information on Holiday's life and music. Then, switching between
Inspiration's Outline and Diagram views, students organized their
information on the artist.
Finally, working from their Inspiration blueprint, students prepared
both a written report and an oral presentation to share information on
the artist with their classmates.
With this project and others created by teachers at the Summer
Institute, the halls will be alive in Boston with the sounds of
Inspiration!
