Version 1.0 of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Personal started shipping in June 1997.  In November of 1997, Dragon started shipping version 2.02 of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Personal (as well as version 2.02 of the Preferred and Deluxe Editions).

Some retail outlets still stock version 1.0 so what is possible that if you just bought the Personal Edition you actually bought version 1.0 instead of version 2.02.  Version 1.0 of Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not really obsolete.  The only real difference between version 1.0 and version 2.02 in terms of features is the addition to multi-user support in version 2.02.

So, if you install version 1.0 and have no problems with it that I recommend keeping it.  If you want multi-user support, or if you have problems with version 1.0 (they were some bug fixes in version 2.02), then you can contact Dragon Systems or upgrade.  I believe that the upgrade for version 1.0 to version 2.02 of the Personal Edition of Dragon NaturallySpeaking is under 20 dollars.
