Here is a utility program called PlayWave.  PlayWave is designed to let you play standard Microsoft wave files into Dragon NaturallySpeaking.  It should work with any version of NatSpeak.  With PlayWave, you can record a file on any computer and then recognize it using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.  You can also use a digital hand-help recorder like the Olympus as long as you convert the digital compressed files (DSS) into wave files.

You can download it as PlayWave.zip.  Extract PlayWave.exe and put it into your c:\NatSpeak\Program directory.

When you run PlayWave, you will see a screen that looks like this:

You should enter the name of a standard Microsoft wave (.wav) file, the kind you record using the Sound Recorder.  The wave file must be recorded as 11,025 Hz, 16 bit, Mono.  If you use the Sound Recorder to set the recording format then you should use the settings as shown below.  (If you wave file is in the wrong format, you will get an obscure error message.)

Once you select the input file, click the Play button and then click on the application you want to be active when NatSpeak recognizes the input file.  Normally, the active application should be Dragon NaturallySpeaking but it might be Microsoft Word or some other application.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking will then recognize all the utterances in your input file as if you spoke them live.  The microphone does not have to be turned on (in fact it is safer to keep the microphone off).  When the input file ends, the PlayWave program will activate letting you play another wave file.

If you need to terminate wave file input before the wave file is finished, click the Stop button on the PlayWave window.  (The Play button changes to a Stop button while the wave file is being recognized.)

Normally PlayWave will cause NatSpeak to recognize the input file as fast as possible.  However, you can force NatSpeak to run no faster than real time to simulate the speed of live input by checking the check box on the PlayWave dialog.

IMPORTANT: PlayWave was developed at Dragon Systems as an internal utility.  The program is (c) Copyright Dragon Systems, 1997-98.   There is no support for PlayWave.  Use this program at your own risk.  PlayWave may not be sold or distributed for commercial purposes.
