First Categories keeps detailed records of an individual's performance. At the end of a lesson, you can save or print out a summary for your permanent files.

Special Macintosh and Windows Features
These versions have two scanning options: linear and step scanning. At the end of a lesson, students are treated to an enjoyable animated scene until an adult exits to the lesson summary. You can collect all of a student's records from Laureate's programs in one file.

Three instructional activities

Review
This activity presents each word in a particular category (e.g. "A horse is an animal.").

Inclusion
This activity asks you to select a word that fits into a particular category (e.g. "Which one is food?").

Exclusion
This activity asks you to find the word that does not belong in a particular category (e.g. "Which one is not a body part?").
