Vocabulary

Product Description:
Talking Nouns I, Talking Nouns II, and Talking Verbs give children and adults with language impairments the opportunity to communicate. These programs complement First Words, First Words II, and First Verbs by encouraging the active use of the same early developing nouns and verbs.

Easy-to-use
Each program contains a colorful plastic overlay that fits on a TouchWindow, PowerPad or IntelliKeys. Users simply select a word, phrase, or picture on the overlay to make the computer speak. Corresponding pictures of nouns or verbs appear on the screen. On the Macintosh and Windows versions, a single switch or mouse can be used to select words directly from the screen.

Versatile teaching tools
These programs offer a variety of activities that reinforce vocabulary comprehension, teach the formation of grammatically correct sentences, improve visual discrimination, and develop conversational turn-taking. Talking Nouns I and Talking Nouns II also provide practice in noun categorization.

Collaborative learning
These programs are ideal for fostering collaborative learning and communication between peers. For individuals who are nonvocal, this series can be used as an introduction to augmentative communication.

Special Macintosh and Windows Features
These versions are accessible with a TouchWindow, IntelliKeys, mouse, or a single switch. With a single switch or mouse, you can select words and pictures directly from the screen. Both linear and step scanning are available and you have the option of having the words spoken as they are scanned. You can collect all of a student's records from Laureate's programs in one file.

Four activities build communication skills.

Interactive Communication
This activity offers two options. With Single Touch Activation, the computer says each word as it is touched on the overlay. If a noun or verb is selected, a corresponding picture appears on the screen. With Sequenced Activation, the computer speaks only after a phrase or sentence has been constructed. The program automatically includes the correct article or verb form so that every phrase or sentence spoken is grammatically correct.

Picture Matching
A picture appears on the monitor screen and the user is asked to touch the corresponding picture on the overlay. This activity challenges visual discrimination skills.

Picture Identification
The computer asks the user to find a word and you must touch the corresponding picture on the overlay. This activity reinforces vocabulary comprehension skills.

Nouns by Category
This activity provides practice in noun categorization. Five nouns from the same category appear on the screen and the user is asked to find them on the overlay. (Not available on Talking Verbs.)
