Product Description:
The Words and Concepts Series integrates language and concept training in a unique way.
Each program uses a core vocabulary of 40 nouns in six related language units: Vocabulary,
Categorization, Word Identification by Function, Word Association, and the Concepts of
Same and Different. These programs will help both children and adults with language
impairments build vocabulary, strengthen their language comprehension, discover word
relationships, and develop important concepts.
Comprehensive training
After mastering the vocabulary unit, individuals learn to organize words into categories,
discover how different objects are used, and identify pairs of words that are commonly
associated. In the Same and Different units, users are asked to differentiate between
pictures by using gross discrimination skills or by looking at small details.
Flexibility and control
Most of the activities have three levels of difficulty. The computer can be set to work on
one level or branch among the levels, following the progress of the individual. These
programs can be used with non-readers, but there is also a text option for beginning
readers and adults with traumatic brain injury or aphasia. At the end of the lesson, a
detailed performance summary is provided.

These versions have two scanning options: linear and step scanning. You can collect all of
a student's records from Laureate's programs in one file.

Vocabulary
Colorful pictures, a friendly voice, text, and animation train 40 nouns. After
instruction, three different pictures appear on the screen and the user is asked to choose
one by name. You can select 20 words at a time or all 40 at once.

Categorization
Individuals work with 20 nouns in four categories. They determine which nouns belong in a
particular category (inclusion) and which ones don't (exclusion). Once again, pictures and
optional text represent the nouns.

Word Identification by Function
Users learn to identify 20 nouns based on their function. Sample question: "Find the
one you wear on your feet."

Word Association
In this activity, individuals determine which noun "goes with" a given noun.
Twenty associated noun pairs are covered. |

Concept - Same/Alike
Users compare and contrast pictures and select the ones that are alike. In one activity,
two pictures represent the same noun and a third represents a different noun. Another
activity presents pictures of the same noun, with only small details differentiating one
picture from either two or three others.

Concept - Different
Once again, users are asked to compare and contrast pictures but this time they must
choose the one that is different. In one activity, they must choose the picture that
represents a different noun. In a second activity, they must find the picture that differs
only in small details. |
